Beyond the Veil Subscription Box - Halloween Oracle Card

The Halloween Oracle
By Stacey Demarco
The interpretations on this page are excerpts from the oracle book.  If you have any questions of the meaning of your card, DM me at @lunam_love, and I will send you my intuitive interpretation of the card.

ANCESTORS

I walk in their footsteps Their wisdoms inside me remains I am unique, yet carry legacy their blood runs in my veins

Whether or not we know our ancestors, we are a product of those who have lived before us, DNA wise. The exterior may reflect that of our parents and grandparents, on the inside it gets even more interesting. We now know we can ‘inherit’ the way our body works, blood type and brain functions.

Many pagan  paths associated with Halloween believe that we are born perfectly imperfect  to be exactly who we are meant to be. The gifts that our ancestors have left us and the unique synergy of the combination of the physical and mental that is created within us, sets us up perfectly to achieve our ultimate purpose .

The ancestors card shows you that you are ready and able to action your birthright of power, you are supported by those who came before you . Challenges and struggles may appear but you are fully prepared and equipped for all of it, you will prevail!

APPLE

Sweetest icon, risky red desire, poison and freedom, tempting hearts afire!

Apples have been a symbol of Samhain for a long time. Apples, cut in half have a seed patterns that looks like a pentagram and so the Celts held the fruit to be sacred. Bobbing for apples, a game traditionally played at Halloween, has its’ origins in the Samhain festival.

The traditional way to play is to place 3 or 13 apples into the barrel of water and the game is to bite into an apple as it floats and bobs in the water, hands cannot touch and people compete with each other, bobbing at the same time. It is believed that Romans brought the custom to Britain as there are images recorded. It was said that unmarried women who placed the apple they bobbed under their pillow would dream of their future husband, In Newfoundland and Ireland Halloween is called Snap Apple Night.

Apples have been an iconic part of mythos from ancient times to modern- the story of the poison apple in Snow White to the Roman goddess Pomona’s magical apple tree, to the Christian’s tempting fruit in the Garden of Eden. Should you receive the Apple in your box it’s time to look at how risk plays out in your life, are you not trying anything new? Do you want change and yet not willing to change anything! Are you willing to risk to get a greater reward? Or alternatively are your risking to much, too often?

BARMBRACK

A pea, a cloth, a coin, a ring and stick within a loaf of speckled sweetness slice it and eat it a glimpse of my fate’s completeness

Not quite a cake and not quite a bread, barmbrack is a sweet loaf, larger than a typical bread loaf. The making of barmbracks is an Irish tradition that still stands around Samhain (HALLOWEEN) The person making it would set the intention of love, truth and synergy whilst preparing. Inside the dough, a number of special objects are hidden and baked into the loaf

The objects are used as a kind of oracle, each has a particular meaning which represents the fate of the person who found it in their slice!

Should your slice contain a coin this would indicate prosperity and good luck! If you find the Barmbrack card it indicates a curiosity to know what is ahead for you, it is important to balance that with the now! We have  the tools to determine our future should be choose to. The sweet synergy of barmbrack and all of the ingredients including the objects are more complete and powerful together than apart, you are encouraged to seek your own sweet spot.

BLACK CAT

Sleek and black and lantern -eyed crossed your path with a hiss, good luck and fortune sweep by with a kiss

In traditional folklore, cats were said to have one foot in this world and one in the next! They are the conduit between the underworld and this world and fortune and opportunity.

In the times of Inquisition, cats were hunted because they were said to be allies of evil entities such as devils and witches. Black cats were especially  singled out, These days, a black cat passing your path is considered misfortune or bad luck. Yet in Ancient Britain they were considered good luck and were even given to brides on their wedding day for good luck. In parts of the world to this very day are considered very good luck and bringers of fortune.

Should you find  the slinky black cat in your box know that good luck and fortune will be meeting you promptly. Also know that your luck will be luckier if you are prepared to take advantage

CAULDRON

Where all things come together, Under pressure, flowful synergy, a new thing is created a crucible of infinity

A typical depiction of a witch sees her standing over a boiling cauldron slowly stirring the bubbling and mysterious contents, stirring the metal pot over the flames she crackles and incants commands to all the elements, transforming the contents into something magical

Cauldrons were commonly used in ancient and medieval times for everything from the nightly meals to making medicine. The ‘family crucible’ was usually placed within the hearth of the home, making it an essential part of family gathering, much healing and nourishment came from the cauldron.

If your box contains the Cauldron card it indicates the importance of combining a variety  of techniques or elements to get he best result. Do not be put all your eggs in one basket, be open to see all options, know that you can find your own way to create something new. The Cauldron is a deeply transformational tool- things always change once under pressure. Resilience is being cultivated over time and that means you will be able to handle any negative pressure much more from the inside out.

DAWN

After the darkest times The sun will always rise The dawn will always come This can be no surprise

While midnight is often thought of as a magical hour, throughout time dawn has also had its share of the mystical. All manner of magical beings had to return to their true forms by dawn. Warewolves and vampires could only be active whilst the ray of the sun did not pierce the sky

Dawn and deities of dawn heralded both hope and new life. Goddess such as Eostre and Gods like Helios and Apollo were those who brought new life and the dawns light to the world. The journey form the darkest night of the soul to a bright and hopeful dawn is one of the deepest and most powerful heroes paths repeated over and over in mythology.

If you find this card in your box, you are being reminded that there is always a fresh start and brand new beginnings. Change is unstoppable and the most difficult times will pass, no matter how devastating they may seem. Hope is one of the most powerful forces in the universe and it’s being indicated here.

DEATH

The eternal cycle begins here

Tis not the end thought I may pass in the night I get to do my time over, although you may get a fright

Many pagans believed that death was the beginning of the cycle of life, most people consider the act of birth to be the beginning of the life cycle- we are born, we live, and we die and depending on your beliefs you have a chance to come back again. Pagan culture see death as the beginning of a whole new adventure, the place where your soul can choose where it incarnates and what it wants to experience.

Halloween is a celebration of death as a part of life. As humans are conscious beings we know about death and many are afraid and uncomfortable about it. Halloween illuminates the universal truth that all of us will die just as all of us were born,

Do not be fearful if you received this card in your box, it simply means that something is falling away, or will do so, so you can create a strong new beginning, there is great power in this clearing. You should actively celebrate this new beginning.

ETERNAL LOVE

Love is love is love and transcends physical death

When the body leaves us and our souls are above our possessions no longer nothing remains but the intertwining of love

All of us are the product of millennia of love. Our ancestors of blood and ritual all have in some way created the DNA that weaves throughout our body. LOVE in fact powers life and death.

When we encounter death in our lives, we experience grieving too and can be defined as the absence of love. The kind of love that is experienced between family, friends and loved ones separated by only physical death is the kind that poets write about, that love truly is eternal and transcends death.

If you find this card in your box you are being reminded that love is the most powerful force in the universe. It is more powerful than death itself. Love lingers. It leaves its own legacy and we should be aware of this every day that we live. If you are ready to experience love this card may indicate that a partner is close and to be ready and open to new experiences.

______________________________________________________________________________

FORGIVENESS

Reducing burden

A wrong is done, consequences you cannot deny, but to hold a grudge is to drink poison and think that the other person will die

Being a cold-season festival, Halloween is the perfect time to pause and think about how things actually are in our lives, and what heavy burdens to release, especially in these times. Some of these heavy burden and heartaches may be connected to old relationships or grievances. Some may relate to negative feelings we hold onto tightly about others and a lack of compassion for the mistakes of others and especially our own.

It takes a big person to forgive, much more than to ask for forgiveness. When we hold grudges the negative can become toxic, while we may harbor feelings of revenge, it is important that we move those feelings along to forgiveness and release as soon as possible for our own health and wellbeing.

If you have chosen this card think about who it is that you could be forgiving, that includes you!

GHOST

Regret

Like smoke rising from the ashes a mist from the sea the dead they are watching they have come to haunt me

The traditional definition of a ghost is the apparition of the sprit or soul of a former living being. Ghost can be in human form or animal or in rare occasion objects as ships have been said to be seen before. The believe in spirit and ghost is widespread across time and cultures and different words such as spiritus, wraith, phantom and shade have been used to refer to them

Ghosts can be both people that we have known (ancestors ) who visit and assist us, it is said that the spirits that that cannot let go of this world have a reason for it, sometimes it is to warm the living, to guide them, but generally it is because they have unfinished business here on the plane of the living, or regrets they need to solve.

If you find a ghost card in your box during divination it may indicate that you have a regret to let go of. Holding grudges or regrets can be heavy and burdensome work and it weighs you down eventually. By taking action to release the burdens we help clear the way for more rightful and wise actions for the future, we can begin to live fully and step into new possibilities.

GRAVEYARD

The stones they mark the eternal resting place yet the spirits they are walking and they are ready for the chase

Today’s modern graveyards are restful places – normally highly manicured and very well sell out, while they can be placed of great sadness, few are the creepy gothic places we see in movies, yet they still hold a fear and seem frightening places.

Countless stories told about haunted graveyards , evoke fear even thinking about walking through a one, imagining zombies and ghost rising from the graves and bad spirits lurking.

This isn’t the way with every culture, Mexican day of the dead is a family picnic at the graves of their loved ones with children playing over through the graveyard in a beautiful celebration. Graveyard dust is used as an ingredient in protective spells not curses

If this card is in your box know that you feel unnecessarily things are not as they seem and you can overcome your obstacles. The anxieties you have although real, should be put aside before they haunt you long term. Instead trust that you know the correct next steps and that you will act upon them.

HEARTH

Happiness in our hearts and homes

The heart of every home

The fire that unites winters warmth centres stories love and delights

The ancient Romans believed that every home had a heart and it was the hearth. Where the fire burned, the family gathered for sustenance, communication and protection. This concept was so important to the culture they had a huge city hearth – the vesta temple – where the fire of the home goddess, Vesta, burned forever without ever going out. This sacred flame was protected with soldiers lives if needed.

The place where the goddess Vesta was honored within every ordinary home was also called a hearth , it was also where women prepared the food, left over food was always  offered back into the hearth to honor Vesta for blessings and protection. Often husbands were sent away for military duty for years and the women were expected to hold down the home and business while waiting for their husbands faithfully until they returned. They prayed to Vesta to endure their family members were safe and returned home to keep the fires of love stoked. The saying : “keep the home fires burning” was inspired by this practice,

If you find the hearth card in your box you are asked to look at your idea of what home and family is for you, take time to build up your  “love” fire and have it burning brightly. Make your relationship a priority. If there is a conflict within your home and family it is time to take concrete steps to address the issue for good. If you have a or are a family member away from home you are protected.

INVISIBILITY

Authenticity

Heart beating we sense but do not see they touch we chill they come unseen

You know that feeling you sometimes have that someone is watching you? You cannot see them, yet you have a distinct feeling that someone is there. All the hairs are up on the back of you neck you think you see something in the corner of your eye, but when you turn there is nothing  to be seen but empty air, this is the power of invisibility. The indirect fear and the convert threat of having to fight something that we cannot ser.

Humans have strong visual sense, so it is no wonder that we are uneasy about things we cannot see. The ancients believed that all manner of creatures -mythical and physical and of course the deities could make themselves invisible at will. When we consider that some animals area camouflaged so well by their coats or behaviour that sometimes even if we are looking straight at them, they are hard to see within their environment, that invisibility isn’t such a far -fetched concept

The concept of invisibility is a double edged sword while it is a powerful tool to be able to gain information or to assist while no one sees, individuals using it are privy to information that may not be meant for them and it may be taken out of context or unethically. The idea of hiding and not being seen is also a big part of the dark side of this concept. We are all born to shine our light out into the world and to take our roles. Hiding our talents not expressing our true selves stealing others ideas or work and being someone else rather than you authentic self are all aspects to consider …

JACK-O-LANTERN

Protection

Oh jack! Oh jack! Let me carve my protection shone your fire outwards evil rejection and reflected

Halloween wouldn’t be the same without the carving of pumpkins into scary jack-o-lanterns. Glowing menacingly from porches, dinner tables and porches everywhere, jacks actually have a rich history and  a spiritual bent,

The original term for a jack- o- lantern was a will-o-the -wisp and old British term, it was a small bundle of sticks used as a flame or torch, the celts , the Irish and those living in Scottish highlands all carved winter vegetables. The time around Samhain (Halloween) was of course when the fae and the goblins were said to be roaming wild and so the lanterns were intended to be both scary and to light the ay in the dark.

If you find this card in your box know that you are being protected and that you are capable of creating the life you want, the universe supports you, Boundaries are important to teach people how to treat you.

JOY

Rejoicing in the present

I stand here I am where I am fully alive and present stress is sham

Besides the “HOOOOO” of a not so scary trick or treating ghost on Halloween evening one of the most common sounds you’ll hear is laughter. There is so much joy of Halloween and it can be one of the most fun nights of the year if we allow that into our lives

We lead busy lives and it sees there is little time for us to stop and be present and enjoy exactly where we are at that time. It has been said that the first step of real of real change is stopping and acknowledging that we actually need change. While sometimes we might feel that there is little to feel happy about and much to change, we can always feel grateful in the present moment, there is such power in that position.

If you find Joy in your box, it is time to find the joy in this moment and to find that joy more often, it heralds arrival of more happiness and profound joy into your life. It is a good omen! Actively seek pleasure and build more of the things that give you JOY and laughter!

LADY DE LOS MUERTOS

Acceptance and equality

Pale you step out of the night in red lace full flowers upon your crown you bring the beauty to death the equality and joy of the underground

The iconic lady of death, with a pale skull – like face, zombies eyes and rich red funeral flowers in her hair has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Halloween and the Mexican Day of the Dead, EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS.

The original model type for the lady of death can be traced back to ancient Aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl. As time went on the figure remained balanced between beauty and horror, and morphed into the lady of the dead and eventually into the figure of “ The Catrina”, the identity of the catrina represented women who were very rich and had everything they wanted in this life. Yet, death takes everyone equally so it was a reminder that no matter what you status is, death takes all.

The Mexican culture has a long standing history of laughing at death and seeing it as just another aspect of life. In some ways death is the last taboo in many western culture. We tend to hide away our dying and some of us may never even see the body of some one who has passed in our whole lives, but this was a much more common occurrence in the past

The LADY DE LOSMUERTO card in you box, ask you to acknowledge that death is a natural process that will enter everyone’s life at some time and that perhaps until then we can choose to be life affirming takes away much of the fear. Take a light approach to a situation and it may work out better if you are holding on to something that does not serve you any longer – in particular material things simplify and let it go!

THE LAMP

Remembrance

I light a single candle within a lamp for you a single flame in the darkness that reflects mt heart so true

The tradition to light a lamp  or candle on Halloween night and leave it at the window was a loving way guide home for those who have passed. Both as a symbol of remembrance and also as a kind of leaving the lights on for those who may wish to come home, the light was left on to illuminate the night and perhaps even the sadness that was felt because of the passing.

If you received THE LAMP in box, it reminds us that it is a positive thing to remember those who have passed by celebrating their life rather than mourning their death. For those that we did not have easy relationship with, they still leave us with valuable lessons, sometimes we learn more from our nemesis than we do our friends… and so the darkness illuminates our strengths and our true values so that we can live them more clearly and fully.

MIDNIGHT

The most magical hours of all

The dark it envelops me the witching hour awaits true magic and enchantment and spells that change fates

The middle of the night- midnight is the hour in which it is believed that ghosts, witches, ghouls and magic are most likely to be active. Transition times such as noon the time between tides or even dark moon are traditionally powerful times for magical transformation

In Christian traditions, the witching hour is 3 am, but there is some consensus that midnight is the time of greatest magic, particularly on Halloween it is said that the sprit flows forward through the veil and if benevolent, bring positive messages. If not so benevolent they are mischievious and play tricks at best and can cause havoc.

If the Midnight card is in your box, allow yourself to relax into the benevolent darkness of midnight. You may feel this is your darkest hour but know that the light will return again. The dawn always follows the darkest night. Know that it is important to recognize that we all have darkness within us, just as we have light and this should not be something to hide from.

MUMMY

Change

The sand in his mouth the bandages wound jealous of the living eternal life bound

The ancient Egyptians took death very seriously. Death was not seen as many of us see it – a finality to be dreaded – but as just the beginning of a new life and often eternal life, in a better place, the after life

The practice of honoring and preserving the body through a complex process of mummification was central to ancient Egyptian culture. This was not just physical embalming process but a carefully enacted ritual process that ensured preservation in the next world, Many other cultures mummified their dead.

Should this card be in your box know that change is inevitable and that no matter how hard you try, things will not be preserved exactly the same way. The card also indicates that this change will be for the better, the ending the doors that closed, these are all healthy pauses and also indicates that change of tactic is needed. You are not cursed – there has been a pattern developed. You can take control and change it!

NIGHTSONG

Hidden talents

A ruby red bird singing in the darkness full of sounds like an unopened present ribbons still bound,

A bird singing at night is an unusual occurrence and those birds who are known as singers of the darkness area almost always considered sacred – of frightening. From the operatic nightingale through to the hooting owl, hearing a bird that you cannot see weaving its magic through the night sky has captivated humans for millennia

In the past, at Halloween time a night that veil between the worlds was said to be at its thinnest, the night birds were considered either omens or messengers of the gods. Depending on the culture, their voices were perceived as good luck and a positive validation or alternatively a warning about continuing on a certain pathways. In some mythology the night bird was able to direct us towards discovering our talent and true purpose – a kind of guide in the darkness leading us to the dawn.

Should this beautiful bird be in you box, know that you can unwrap the present of yourself, LOOK! Some of the gifts within you remain unopened! The time has come to step into your true potential and claim all possibilities for yourself, there is no time to waste! NO MORE EXCUSES!

OWL

Wise seeing wise actions

Silent winged and wise all seeing creature of the night show me the way I will follow you in flight

Owls have for thousand of years been part of folklore and have been considered a special or scared animal. With their huge forward – facing eyes and otherworldly appearance, they have been seen as both wise and a harbingers of the supernatural.

There are many hundred of species of owls  and almost all nocturnal and carnivorous. Interestingly they all have special designed feathers that enable them to fly silently at night giving them an incredible hunting advantage.

Many deities were said to be able to change into owls and perhaps the most famous weas the Greek goddess Athena, who was famous for her strategy and intelligence.

Should you receive the Owl card in your box, it requires wise council or that further information is needed to make your decision. Take caution in your actions, think before you speak and act, note your emotions and ensure to think strategically and not impulsively.

SCRYING

Intuition

Soften your eyes begin the trance whole worlds are opened begin the dance

Scrying is the divination technique of seeing unconscious images to appear upon or within a surface. People scry into a crystal ball, a black mirror, water, even the surface of ice. It is a very ancient technique and one traditionally enacted on Samhain

The key to effective scrying are being area relaxed as possible, minimizing possible distraction, softening your gaze and allowing

If you regularly meditate you may wish to use those techniques, it is vital to settle the mind as much as possible. Otherwise close your eyes and focus on slowing down the breath.

If you receive the scrying card, I suggest you try it for starters. It also indicates that you may wish to develop your intuition further and not rely solely on the logical part of your mind for all the answers. True wisdom takes a balance of logic and imagination and intuition for true wisdom .

SKELETON

Strength

On the outside is flesh on the inside in bone there is strength in vulnerability in power we have grown

Halloween is a scary festival. It is meant to frighten we are meant to feel the release of being pleasantly scared. We trick or treat even though we know that someone may surprise you, we watch horror films knowing they will scare us,  we even dress as skeletons who have no flesh at all and their bones are there for all to see! In short, we show our vulnerability at Halloween and our strength in facing our fears too.

There is incredible strengths in showing vulnerability it can often be the bravest course of action and the most frightening. More often then not it is can cause powerful growth, although it doesn’t seem that way at the time.

By showing our vulnerability and our true self we can seek and receive greater understanding from others. By admitting our faults or that we do not have the answers, we leave more room to turn things around. It is ok to ask people for support, it is a sign of strength and growth and wisdom and not a sign of weakness. Release grudges or embarrassment! Release them all as they should not be carried through the darkest of nights .

SKULL OF DARKNESS

Blind spots

We may not wish to delve there the shadows the darkness the unknow yet when we search we reveal and our power it has grown.

The beautiful and mysterious skull of darkness encourages us to look to the part of ourselves that normally remains hidden or as unseen as possible

We may not appreciate or like certain aspects or ourselves and yet, sometimes our greatest treasure lie within these areas, Additionally all of us at some stage of life have certain blind spots that may cause us grief and trouble. Although we cannot see the issue clearly it is the repeated patterns of pain that may alert us to them – symptoms if you will. For example the same things keep happening over and over again, we may be betrayed repeatedly, failed at something repeatedly, not complete task continually. Peace and pattern – breaking can be achieved by doing the work in uncovering our blind spot or even consulting trusted friends and professional to assist us to see what we cannot

______________________________________________________________________________

SKULL OF FLOWERS

Creating through the ashes

To blossom and bloom the work must be done through fire and ashes our fortune it comes

Before flowers are born, they are sweet buds on a plant that came from a smaller from like a seed or a bulb. The seed needs prepared nourishing soil to grow to it’s potential. Some plants and trees only seed after fire or a period extreme adversity like drought or flood.

Sometimes we wish for a life different from the one we have and that can mean radical change to have that new life, everything falls apart to make it so,  although that can be uncomfortable. We may lose relationships and jobs or have to move homes, or any big events that lead to a reassessment of the how of our lives.

The skull of flowers illustrates that there is a sureness and yet a rawness to creating again, to starting fresh! Sometimes the universe gives us a clean slate to work from in order to build what we really want. Don’t settle for less. The skull of flowers reflect a phoenix energy as well as success energy to fully bloom through adversity.

SKULLS OF LIGHT

Illumination

We can stay in the dark exist only in the midnight hours but shinning the torch the victory is ours

As the famous psychotherapist Jung suggested, knowing our own darkness helps us cope with the darkness of others. Taking the time to know thyself and to seek understanding of our more destructive or shadow natures can led to huge happiness and less anxiety

The idea of being shown the way in the most difficult times, knowing that we are never really alone in the darkness are the key to this magical element, the light can be a comfortable thing we don’t always want to see the boogie man under the bed can feel scary and too big and we do not know how to defeat it, by simply lighting the torch upon such darkness the victory is ours.

If the SKULL OF LIGHT enter your life, know that it is time to open yourself fully to the clarity of bright illumination. Allow yourself to be seen, to see and to act upon what is shown to you. The time has passed to keep hiding, or pretending, do not accept the status quo it does not suit you!

SKULL OF STARS

Infinite possibilities

Why think so small when galaxies spin within realize that you are made of the stuff of stars and infinite possibilities begin

This skull brings us back to the fact that we are all made of the stuff of stars yet many of us think so small! We are each born with a black canvas to paint upon and we are indeed an open sky of possibility

It is easy to feel small in a world that is so busy, impersonal and seemingly self absorbed.  We can, at times, feel lost and unclear about our direction and lose sight of our place in the cosmos. The skull of stars reminds us that we are only limited by our own imagination boundaries. If we can dream it, it is possible

If you receive the SKULL OF STARS in your box, you need to think bigger and more broadly about your future and what you would like to achieve. Perhaps it is time to clear any false believes that no longer serve you as you grow and change. It is time to honor your truth and endeavour with all your heart and soul to live the life you want.

______________________________________________________________________________

SPIDER

Community and web-weaving

She spins her silk alone in the dark with hope of collection sticky with dreams weaving the worlds a wide web of connection

Masses of sticky spider webs make any Halloween decorations complete. The idea of a haunted house covered in the artwork of a big hairy spider is classic horror. Even those of us who appreciate our eight legged friends is still hurriedly brush off those stealthy web if we run into them in the dark

Humans have an innate fear of them, though some are not venomous, Some cultures however revere the spider in a very positive way. In many Native American traditions for example the spider is the creature that gives birth to all other animals and sustains the web of life, the goddess spider grandmother (also spider woman) is a key deity that brings wisdoms safety and communication to all the tribes. She created and wove all the stars in the sky and makes soft webs for those that are troubled to rest upon and be supported by.

If the spider card is in your box, take into consideration that spiders webs can be seen as a symbol of connection, not necessarily entrapment. There is a fine line sometimes between a family or community supporting us and controlling us. It also ask that you review the way you communicate with the wider community and work with others, take steps to improve, it is also time to find balance with what you do for other and yourself, giving to much to others can diminish our inner strength and we cannot weave the supporting web for ourselves.

______________________________________________________________________________

TRICK OR TREATING

Mischief and play

Stalking and stomping eye shinning and begging baskets faces and bodies that re no longer ours laughing skeletons and candy caskets

Trick or treating is such a fun thing to do, is it not? Yet why do we trick or treat?

Ancient peoples understood that there were both mischievous and perhaps nasty spirits wandering around at nightfall at Halloween as well as happier, more benevolent spirits. They thought that if they dressed as spirits themselves then they would not be recognized as human and attacked. The idea of causing a little chaos as one of the spirits was part of the imitation of the night, the practice in medieval Britain was aptly called “souling”

Today trick or treating is huge event, we spend a lot of time planning for this event, keeping the tradition and idea of frightening away death and darkness still stands. In more modern times it brings communities together by introducing families and friends to those around us in a non threating and joyful way. Halloween teaches us not to be so reserved and extend our boundaries.

Should you receive the trick or treat card it may well be a time to examine the role of play and mischief in your own life. You don’t have to be a child to let go and have some fun! Sometimes we are afraid to make mistakes, it is time to play as it helps to release stress and pressure that we sometimes place on ourselves. It is also worth knowing that a balance between manipulation and mischief the former is not pleasant and the other has , at its core, a sense of irreverent fun.

THE UNDERWORLD

Where all things pause and begin again

Another realm shadow filled travel from deaths bed where we stop and transform within the realm of the dead

The idea of an underworld a whole other realm that we go to after we die, is a concept that crosses a huge variety if cultures and eras. For many cultures the all have a distinct word for the underworld what is different however is how those cultures treat this concept, whether the underworld is seen as a place of rest and rejuvenation or horror or punishment.

The Christian hell is a place of darkness fire and punishment, the Egyptian underworld is one of judgment peace and renewal. In Maori culture it is an in-between place of waiting, wisdom and transition. Many myths that mention the underworld often involve the concept of a place of waiting and of trails and eventually judgment. It can also be a place of joy and peace.

VAMPIRE

Emotional intelligence

The deepest the coldest the craving of the blood the hole never filled the longing like a flood

While there are uncountable examples of vampires in literature and movies, somehow the archetype of the blood-hunting night-stalking and somewhat elegant creature keeps being reinvented to seduce yet another generation

The vampire is an interesting figure because it is both horrifying and desirable. Having someone want us do much that they desire to be that closely linked with us, does feel good- until we realize there is nothing much left of us to give.

Most of us have heard if the concept of emotional vampirism – the idea that people feed off our energy and our goodwill and take advantage of us through manipulation and their incessant neediness.

If you find the vampire card in your box, it may indicate that you are being drained in this way and the time has come for stronger boundaries. We need to be very aware of what gives us energy in our lives and what takes it away. We should be aware of needing people to need us and why we attract people like that into all aspects of our lives. Developing the emotional intelligence within ourselves helps us defend against this kind of emotional and physic attack and help foster healthy equal relationships of all kinds.

THE VAIL

There is a misty curtain that divides us all the veil that this night thins transparent the weave becomes and the future no longer dims

The ancient celts used to call the time of the longest night of the year Samhain (pronounced sow-en) They believed that there was a misty veil that separated the world of the dead and the living.

The fineness of the veil meant the ancestors were closer than ever and even the gods would be close. This would mean that communication from the dead would be more likely to occur and that divination would be more effective.

So this card in your box lets you know that the veil has lifted and the other worlds are close. Listen in particular to what messages may come forth around your future. Look to what you want to happen, plan and set intentions!! THINK BIG!

WEREWOLF

Exploring wildness

Luminosity triggers it , a wild moon rises, plain and blood fangs fur and howling and wolfen guises

After a painful excruciating bone jarring struggle against the change, the man releases to the magic. Howling unrestrained under the full moon, now the half man half wolf rises up, and goes looking for blood. YES! We all know the power of the werewolf.

After the end of the European witch-trials an intense interest in the werewolf developed into folklore tales and evolved to become the stuff of horror stories. The werewolf is a kind of shapeshifter, but one that has little control over his wildness. In a way an inner battle between civilization and wild animal nature to fight inside, the vitality strength and freedom of the animal versus the reason, control and intellect of the man. What is the healthy balance between our animal and nature one is wild, free and connected to nature. The werewolf asks us to consider this balance and to delve into our own ideas of wildness, independent and custodianship of the planet. When is the last time you spent all day outside? The werewolf challenges you to weave a balance between nature and your own nature.

WINTER
the sacredness of pausing

Lightly I step, for the earth falls asleep a lullaby to rest and pause the soul’s secret to keep

Death is frightening even though it is inescapable. However, as we move into winter, we know it signals a literal and metaphysical death. In some parts of the planet the extreme weather means snow and ice buries all life and ground lies fallow and still.

In winter, the earth slows down and there is less light and often more wet weather. Nature dies down and animals become less active and traditionally a leaner and more difficult time. Winter often brought with it an end of a life cycle, figurative and literal death.

If the Winter card chose you – it is time to let go of what no longer serves you die away, where it seems natural and right to let things that have been bothering you for some time die back, take real action to change those things. It’s time to release

THE WITCH

The earthly weaver of the worlds

Earth, Air, Fire, Water a women lovely. A women strange waver of the worlds moon’s daughter witch: the catalyst for change

Witches have had a bad PR day for a couple of millennia now. Originally, the healers or cunning women of the village, the very word “witch” comes from the Celtic word “wicce’ meaning ‘weaver’ or ‘wise’. When the new religion of Christianity spread through the land the custodians of the old pagan ways in part witches were labelled as evil and as we know from history persecuted. They were driven underground under the night sky into the shadows of misunderstanding and darkness.

For the purpose of Halloween lets  relate to witches as the weavers of magic and change. Through spells and rituals and even through herbal recipes, they weave together the powers of this world and the next with synergy to solve problems and heal.

Receiving the witch card means that you can weave your own change throughout your life and that in itself is magic. You have the power! It may also indicate that others may be threatened by your developing personal power and they may not appreciate or like the change in you as you grow, do not be discourage new relationships and better opportunities will be attracted instead

ZOMBIE

Control

The dead arise voices a mumbling after our brains our screams they are trumbling

Zombies have become quite the fashion recently, the living dead. Zombies are not merely a dun icon of popular culture, traditionally they are mainly associated with the African and Haitian Vodou religion. Zombies are said to bead bodies reanimated by incantation chanted by a learned practitioner and they are usually enlivened for a purpose.

The practitioner is said to capture part of a living soul to animate the body and that it is always a temporary action as the soul cannot be contained in that decomposing body for long or god will take the soul back.

One of the scarier aspects of the idea of Zombies is the idea of our souls and consciousness being trapped inside a body that does not do our bidding but someone else’s.

if your box has the Zombie card it is time to look at the concept of control, do you want to control everything? Do you choose partners who are not your equal so that they are more easily manipulated and changed to your liking, or do you allow that to happen to you? If you are not living authentically in all aspects of your life it is time to take a deeper look, and understand why and how to change that.
